Held: 19th of August 2005, 9.00h, room Knuth
(B340),
This
workshop presents the state-of-the-art and benefits of software quality
assessment and discusses research directions for further improvements. Goal of
the workshop is to develop an applied research project in software quality
assessment with both scientific quality and industrial relevance. This project
will then be proposed to the KK-foundation in September 2005 as a relaunch of
an application from 2004.
Software
maintenance is expensive today. Cost estimations of resources and time range
from 50% to 80% of the total costs of ownership of a piece of software. It
seems to be obvious that high internal software quality can reduce these costs
considerably. This hypothesis, however, is not validated scientifically in
industrial settings, which will be the basis for the research questions in the
applied research project. Such a validation requires an implementation of
software quality methods suiting real-world development process. Getting
manpower and technical support in this development work is the prospected
benefit of the applied research project for participating companies. Currently,
we research how to assess, assure and improve software quality during the
development of new software systems and in the maintenance of legacy systems.
Tools and processes are available and even an ISO standard is defined. Methods,
tools, and processes are already applied and there is a proof of concepts in
controlled settings.
